Tonight we had Nancy Capelle from Cardiac Companions talking with us about CPR in schools.

CPR is being pushed as a requirement in schools in various states such as Illinois, New York, and Oklahoma.

Nancy, herself, is a survivor of a MI and subsequent arrest. She is also a volunteer EMT with the Wilton (CT) Volunteer Ambulance Corps. She is a recipient of a Certificate of Recognition from Connecticut State Representative John Hetherington for her work in the HEARTSafe designation for the town of Wilton. Just five months after her cardiac arrest, Nancy was a “Red Cap” Team Leader for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk as well as a spokesperson. She has also trained countless individuals in Hands Only CPR

CPR is something that should be taught in schools.

I also pulled out the book for the Boy Scouts First Aid Merit Badge and noticed that it does cover CPR for the merit badge.

Nancy reminded us that women do have increased risk factors for a heart attack. Most won’t present with the “classic” symptoms of one (Radiating CP, dyspnea, nausea, diaphoresis). Even us EMS providers are prone to dismiss a woman having a heart attack as having a panic attack.

There is also increased PTSD and depression for survivors.

Of course, we mentioned this little video that was making the rounds a couple of years ago:
